What should you know about TBIs?

On Behalf of | Mar 26, 2021 | Car Accidents |

After getting into a crash, you will likely suffer from injury. Head, neck and back injuries are among the most common. If you suffer from a head injury, you are also likely to deal with a brain injury, too.

In particular, traumatic brain injuries can cause great harm. What should you know about them? What are the signs you should keep an eye out for?

What are TBIs?

Mayo Clinic takes a look at traumatic brain injuries. These injuries often have stronger and more noticeable symptoms than other sorts of head injuries. They happen due to worse trauma than typical brain injuries, too. Still, symptoms differ depending on the location of the wound, the health of the victim and other factors.

Symptoms can come in physical, behavioral and mental form. The former is often easiest to recognize. Victims can suffer from unconsciousness, clear fluid draining from the ears or nose, and uneven dilation of pupils. They may also experience head pain that worsens over time. The same goes for nerve damage that affects the extremities.

Mental and behavioral signs

Mentally, a cloudy perception and memory issues are common. Victims often forget what happened at the time of an incident. Their confusion can lead to behavioral effects. For example, they may lash out at loved ones, grow suspicious and paranoid, or refuse to see a doctor.

TBIs need immediate evaluation by a medical professional. This is the only way to ensure you get the treatment you need. Thus, if any signs of TBIs get noticed, you should make the effort to take the affected individual to a hospital quickly.
